Ancient Egyptians created pyramids to demonstrate the power and wealth of the people buried within them. The first pyramid ever built was the Step Pyramid of Djoser (above) at Saqqara, which is now about 4,700 years old. Step pyramids get their name because the outside looks like gigantic steps leading to the top. The Step Pyramid of Djoser was built as a tomb for a pharaoh named Djoser, who ruled Egypt around 2670 BCE. This striking early pyramid has six tiers of steps and is about 200 feet tall. Beneath the structure are 3.5 miles of tunnels and about 400 rooms. Most of the treasures that Djoser was buried with, along with his mummy (preserved and bandaged body), were stolen long ago by thieves.…
