New hate crime laws in Australia

Australia has made jail time mandatory for people convicted of hate crimes. The decision was made after a recent increase in antisemitic (hostility or prejudice against Jewish people) attacks on synagogues, schools, and other places used by Jewish communities in the nation. People will now serve minimum sentences that range in length based on the seriousness of their crime. The punishment for less-serious crimes will be at least 12 months in jail. These include such offenses as painting racist graffiti or giving a salute used by the Nazis (German political party that killed 6 million Jewish people and millions of others during the Holocaust from 1933–1945) in public.
