Great Backyard Bird Count set to start

From February 14 to 17, people worldwide will take part in an annual event called the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Anyone can participate by counting and identifying birds and then sharing the findings on a website or app. Since 1998, researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Society have organized the GBBC to gather data on wild birds. Another organization, Birds Canada, joined in 2009. During the four-day event, the groups ask bird lovers to become citizen scientists (people who volunteer to collect data for scientific research) by spending at least 15 minutes counting the birds they see in an outdoor area, such as a local park or the yard outside their home.
