Massive demonstrations in Iran

In September, protests against the government swept across Iran, marking the largest push for social reform there in decades. The demonstrations were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, age 22, on September 16. Amini died in police custody after being arrested for showing part of her hair. Under Iranian law, women must completely cover their hair with a hijab (headscarf). Officials said Amini had a heart attack, but her family said she was mistreated. After Amini’s death, thousands of Iranian women and men took to the streets, calling for an end to strict laws that limit women’s rights. Government forces beat and arrested thousands of people.
