Farewell to a queen

Queen Elizabeth II, monarch of the UK and a group of countries called the Commonwealth, died on September 8 at age 96. The queen reigned for 70 years, longer than any monarch in UK history. Elizabeth became queen in 1952, at age 25, when her father, King George VI, died. As queen, she had no official political power, but she advised prime ministers, represented the UK to the world, and was head of the royal family. She lived a life of service. “I shall always work…to advance the happiness and prosperity of my peoples,” she said after taking the throne.
