Midterm elections deliver divided Congress

Millions of Americans voted in the midterm elections on November 8. A midterm happens halfway through a President’s four-year term and determines whether Republicans or Democrats (the two major political parties) control the House of Representatives and the Senate (the two parts of Congress). Other state and local races were also determined on November 8. In the House, all 435 seats were up for election. Many of the races were too close to call on Election Day, but by November 16, it was determined that the Republicans had won the majority of seats. This means that the House changed from being controlled by the Democrats to being controlled by the Republicans. The final count was 222 Republicans to 213 Democrats.
