Millions play new word game

Wordle, a simple online word game played by millions of people every day, reached superstar status in 2022. The New York Times bought it in January from Josh Wardle, a software engineer in New York City who created the game as a gift for his word-loving partner. In the game, players have six chances to guess a five-letter word and can share their results, which show guesses in rows of colored squares, in a text message or on social media. (Green indicates a correct letter in the right spot, yellow is a correct letter in the wrong spot, and gray means an incorrect guess.)
