Florida takes steps to save manatees

Wildlife officials took bold action to save Florida manatees by creating a plan to feed them. The Indian River Lagoon in Florida is a warm winter home for manatees, and the animals’ main source of food is seagrass, a plant that grows entirely underwater. Over the past 10 years, warmer water temperatures and the growth of algae, which blocks the sunlight that seagrass needs to grow, have made 90% of the seagrass in the lagoon disappear. In 2021, without enough food to eat, 1,100 manatees died. Wildlife officials are working to improve the lagoon’s water quality. Since that can take years, however, a program to stop starvation deaths was launched. Manatees were fed greens, like cabbage and lettuce.
