Researchers map resilient coral reefs
Researchers studying coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea mapped out which ones are most likely to survive as the world’s weather warms up. Coral reefs can be home to thousands of species of marine life and help protect shorelines. However, high sea temperatures cause coral bleaching, which makes the coral reef turn completely white and leaves it less protected against disease. The scientists set out to find coral reefs around Caribbean islands that are most likely to survive both rising ocean temperatures and hurricane damage and made them priorities for protection. The most resilient reefs lie mainly along the northern coast of Cuba. Researchers said protecting these reefs will help “these precious habitats persist.”…
