Ghana approves malaria vaccine

On April 13, Ghana became the first nation in the world to approve a new malaria vaccine that has been described as a “world changer.” A vaccine is a medication given to a person to prevent a disease. Malaria is caused by tiny parasites (living things that live in or on other living things and get nourishment from them). It typically spreads to a person through the bite of an infected mosquito. More than 600,000 people die from malaria every year. Young children are at the highest risk, and most cases occur in Africa. Scientists have been working on malaria vaccines for more than 30 years.
