New year festival held in Thailand

On April 13, thousands of people in Thailand marked the Buddhist new year with the Songkran Water Festival, one of the nation’s most important celebrations. The festival had not been held since 2020, due to the pandemic. Songkran lasts about three days and has roots in Buddhism, a religion widely practiced in Thailand. Water is a Buddhist symbol of renewal, and during Songkran it represents washing away the past year. The festival also honors the end of the dry season and focuses on moving forward. One ancient tradition is for younger people to sprinkle water on the hands of elders to get their blessings for the coming year.
