Blackberries are ready to eat
The common bramble is a tough plant that is common across the UK. Its strong roots can take hold almost anywhere and its long stems, covered in sharp thorns, grow up to two metres high. Ancient Britons used brambles as a barrier, much like we use barbed wire. The plants grow in hedgerows or clumps and have dark green leaves, with three or five sections that have jagged edges. Clusters of white or pale pink flowers appear in late spring to early summer and bees love them. The bramble’s shiny fruit – a cluster of “druplets” – will have turned from green to red to black by now, and are ready to eat.
