Marathon joy for runners

On 2 October, the 42nd London Marathon took place. More than 40,000 people competed in the 26.2-mile event through the city streets. Some were elite professional athletes, others ran in fancy dress to raise money for charity. In the elite women’s race, Yalemzerf Yehualaw, from Ethiopia, finished first with a time of two hours, 17 minutes and 26 seconds – despite tripping on a speed bump six miles from the finish. At 23, she became the youngest female London Marathon champion. Yehualaw beat Joyciline Jepkosgei, from Kenya, who came second. Kenya’s Amos Kipruto won the elite men’s competition in two hours, four minutes and 39 seconds. He was 33 seconds ahead of Leul Gebresilase, from Ethiopia, who came second.
