Great spotted woodpecker

American scientists have discovered that the noise woodpeckers make when they tap on trees is controlled by the same part of the brain that controls singing in songbirds. There are three woodpecker species in the UK – the most common is the great spotted woodpecker. • LIFESPAN: Estimated to be an average of two years. • HABITAT: Gardens, parks and woodland. • DIET: Insects, tree seeds, young birds and eggs. • FUN FACT: The drumming sound made by a great spotted woodpecker’s beak is used to declare ownership of its territory, scare off rivals and create nest holes.
