Indonesian football tragedy investigated

Indonesia’s football association has launched an investigation following one of the worst sporting disasters in the country’s history. On 1 October, at least 125 people died following a football match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium on the island of Java. When Arema FC lost, some supporters ran onto the pitch and clashed with police. Police fired tear gas (chemicals that irritate the eyes, lungs and skin) at them to get them off the pitch. As fans ran to escape, many were caught up in a crush. Tear gas is sometimes used by police forces, but its use inside stadiums is banned by FIFA, football’s governing body and the organisers of the World Cup.
