Introduced into the UK in the late 19th century, the American grey squirrel caused a huge drop in the UK’s native red squirrel population. Grey squirrels live in gardens, parks and woods across the UK. They have a silver-grey coat, with brown faces and feet, a pale underside and bushy tail. Grey squirrels are larger than red squirrels and have smaller ears without tufts. They eat acorns, flowers, nuts, pine cones, shoots and tree seeds and are busy gathering food in autumn. Squirrels bury food, ready to eat in winter when there is less about. They sometimes pretend to bury nuts to fool other watching squirrels. Babies are born in spring or summer in tree nests, called dreys, which are made from twigs, leaves and bark.…
