Should factory farming be banned?
On 25 September, Switzerland voted not to ban factory farming, a form of farming where animals are kept in tightly controlled conditions and might never go outside. Many people believe that factory farming is cruel – a recent poll showed that 78% of British people are “strongly opposed” to it. Yet factory farming makes up more than 70% of meat farming in the UK, and there are more than 1,000 huge factory farms in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The largest poultry “mega-factory farm” can hold as many as 1.4 million chickens and other birds. Some people argue that factory farming means meat is cheap and keeping food costs down is important, particularly when food, fuel and energy costs are rising. What do you think?
