Russia annexes parts of Ukraine

On 30 September Russian president Vladimir Putin announced that four areas of Ukraine had been “annexed” and claimed that they are now officially part of Russia. What is annexation? Annexation is when one country makes another territory part of itself by force and without permission. Annexing a country or territory is against international law. In 2014, Crimea, a region in Ukraine, was annexed by Russia with the support of military forces backing Russia. The action caused anger among many countries around the world. Many people see Putin’s decision to annex four areas of Ukraine as increasing the tension between Russia and the countries that support Ukraine. Which territories is Putin annexing?
