This weekend, the men’s football World Cup kicks off in Qatar. Our All About feature (p12) takes a good look at the month-long festival of football. Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup has attracted a lot of criticism because the country has a poor human rights record (how it treats people). Our news story (p3) explains more about this. Although football is a thrilling spectacle (as the Lionesses’ inspiring triumph this summer showed), it’s also about people coming together. It has the power to raise awareness of important issues like human rights in Qatar and racism – such as when footballers bent down on one knee before games. That’s why I’ll be keeping a very keen eye on events both on and off the pitch in the first World Cup…
