The referees Three female referees, Salima Mukansanga (pictured), Stéphanie Frappart and Yoshimi Yamashita are on the list of 36 match officials – a first in World Cup history. All referees will have access to new tech, including 12 cameras that can check a player’s exact position on the pitch. The mascot The mascot for this year’s tournament is La’eeb – an Arabic word that means “super-skilled player”. La’eeb was inspired by a traditional Arab headdress called a ghutrah.
