Children’s books reflect UK better

A new report from the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) has revealed that children’s books in the UK feature more black, Asian and ethnically diverse characters than they used to. The CLPE surveyed 5,383 books that are aimed at children aged from three to 11, including fiction, non-fiction and picture books. Their Reflecting Realities report shows that 20% of children’s books published in the UK in 2021 feature a black, Asian or ethnically diverse character. This is up from just 4% in 2017 when the CLPE first did the survey. The report also revealed that the mix of people who were included varied depending on what kind of book it was.
