Ukraine reclaims Kherson

Ukrainians have been celebrating after Russia pulled its troops out of the city of Kherson on 9 November. What’s been happening in Kherson? Kherson is a port city in southern Ukraine that stands beside the Dnieper River. It is the capital of a region called Kherson Oblast. After Russia invaded Ukraine in February, it was the first big city to be captured. In September, the Russian government claimed that Ukrainian people living in Kherson, along with other areas, had voted for the region to become a part of Russia. The Ukrainian government and many other countries said that they did not believe the results, but Russia illegally annexed (declared that it owned and controlled) Kherson on 30 September.
