People across the UK cast their votes

On 5 May, after The Week Junior went to press, people in England, Scotland and Wales were due to vote in local elections. The results were expected to be confirmed on 6 May and 7 May. What is a local election? In local elections the public votes for councillors to run their local councils. It is local councils that decide how your area is run. They are responsible for things including bus routes, libraries, parks, rubbish collections and schools, and whether plans for new buildings should be allowed.
