ELSIE “Electronic Letter Sorting Indicating Equipment” was a mail-sorting machine that turned each postcode into a series of dots and printed them onto the envelope. The code could then be read automatically and each letter directed to its correct area. Poco the Elephant In the 1970s, the Post Office created a character called Poco – an elephant with a knot in its trunk to remind it to use the postcode. Poco had its own song written by Bryan Daly, who also created the music for the original Postman Pat television series. Millions and billions The UK is divided up into 124 postcode areas.
