The West Japan Rail Company has revealed its latest recruit – a robot shaped like the upper half of a human body that can be mounted on the end of a crane to carry out dangerous tasks and lift heavy loads. The robot is controlled by an operator who wears virtual-reality (VR) tech that allows them to see the same 3D view as the robot’s own twin cameras. The robot’s arms can lift much more than a human but its gripping pincers are also suitable for holding tools and carrying out tasks such as cleaning overhead cables.
