Special fossils found in Wales

Fossils found in Wales that date back 460 million years could be one of the world’s most important fossil findings because they give scientists clues as to how species evolved. More than 170 fossil species were discovered near Llandrindod Wells, Powys. The fossils are special because they show many whole animals (rather than bits of them), as well as soft tissue (such as brains, eyes, muscles and nerves). Usually when fossils turn up, only bones or exoskeletons (bones on the outside) or shells are visible. When they looked at the finds under a microscope, experts discovered new fossils that belonged to species including opabinia (a strange-looking creature with five eyes), worms, starfish and a type of horseshoe crab.
