100 years of women in the Met

On 17 May, a ceremony was held at Westminster Abbey in London to mark 100 years of women in the Metropolitan Police Service, more commonly known as the Met. Formed in 1829, the Met is the police force for London’s 32 boroughs and is the biggest in the UK. It was on 17 May 1919 that women police officers, known then as the Women Patrols, wore their uniforms in public for the first time, at a ceremony to commemorate all the police officers who died during the First World War (1914–1918). Before this year’s ceremony, 12 female police officers gathered at Westminster Abbey to recreate the first photo of the Women Patrols, which was taken 100 years ago.
