To mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day on 6 June, the Imperial War Museum has planned a week of events, including a recreation of the D-Day landings. D-Day is the name given to the invasion of Normandy, France, in 1944 by the Western Allies (a group of countries including the UK and US) during the Second World War. The purpose was to free western Europe from the Nazis, who ruled Germany and had invaded several countries. D-Day was the largest military air, land and sea operation in history. At the time, UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill said it was “undoubtedly the most complicated and difficult operation that has ever taken place”.
