World’s fastest bullet train

With a top speed of 249mph, Japan’s shinkansen ALFA-X will become the fastest bullet train in the world when it is put into service in 2030. Tests began on 10 May, during which the train will speed down a track twice a week for the next three years. Japan’s bullet train system is more than 50 years old and is one of the safest ways to travel, despite the high speeds. These electric trains have long, aerodynamic noses that reduce the resistance from air whizzing past. ALFA-X will test several different noses – including one that is 22 metres long – to find out which is the best.
