This month marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Channel Tunnel, an underground route that connects the UK to mainland Europe by train. Opened on 6 May 1994, it is still the longest undersea tunnel in the world – a 31-mile engineering wonder that carries trains at 100mph. Read on to discover its remarkable history. Where does the tunnel go? The Channel Tunnel runs between Folkestone in England and Calais in France. There are two ways people can travel through the tunnel: they can either take a Eurostar passenger train or travel  in their own cars, which are loaded on to special “Le Shuttle” trains for the 35-minute journey.
