Experts are asking volunteers to support a nationwide survey of rare beetles. For two weeks in June, noble chafer beetles will be caught and released to help monitor populations. ● LIFESPAN IN THE WILD: Four to six weeks, once they have emerged from their larvae. ● HABITAT: Woodland and orchards with old, decaying wood. The beetles particularly love cherry, plum and apple trees that are between 50 and 80 years old. ● DIET: Adults feed upon pollen and nectar from flowers. ● FUN FACT: The beetles’ eggs hatch into larvae that live for two to three years before becoming adult beetles. NO PLACE LIKE HOME It is thought that some noble chafer beetles never leave the tree on which they were born.…
