The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has apologised to the families of 10 people who were shot and killed during British Army operations in Ballymurphy, an area in Belfast in Northern Ireland, in 1971. What happened? In August 1971,10 people were killed in Ballymurphy when the British Army was stationed in Belfast. The deaths took place in five separate incidents during fighting and rioting in west Belfast in August 1971. The unrest was part of a violent conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles, which took place from around 1968 to 1998. This was because some people (unionists), wanted Northern Ireland to stay as part of the UK.
