China lands its rover on Mars

China has become only the second country, after the US, to land a spacecraft on Mars. On 15 May, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced that its Zhurong rover had landed on the Red Planet. Zhurong is named after the god of fire in ancient Chinese mythology. It was transported to Mars on board the Tianwen-1 spacecraft, which launched in July 2020. Tianwen-1 has been orbiting Mars since February this year, taking pictures of the surface to find the safest place for the rover to land. After a nine-minute descent, Zhurong landed in a part of Mars known as Utopia Planitia. It is thought there might once have been an ocean there.
