Every year, millions of people visit the world’s ancient monuments, such as the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt (built around 2500BC), and Britain’s 4,500-year-old stone circle at Stonehenge. As the years pass, stones often start to crumble and things fall apart. The Great Sphinx has lost its nose. Various stones are missing or have fallen over at Stonehenge. The Colosseum in Rome has no floor covering its underground chambers. The director of the Colosseum, Alfonsina Russo, said that building a new floor “will give us back the same vision from the stage of the monument that it had in ancient times”.
