Calls to end Israel-Gaza conflict

The United Nations (UN) has called for an end to the violence between Israel and Palestine. The UN is an organisation of 193 countries that takes action on human rights, peace and climate change. Since 10 May, more than 219 people have died and more than 1,440 have been wounded in Palestine, and 12 people have died in Israel. Why is there conflict? Jerusalem is a city in the Middle East that both Israel and Palestine claim as their capital and as a religious site (see panel). The conflict between Israel and Palestine goes back many years. In 1917, Jewish people were promised land in Palestine for a “national home”. Palestine had a small community of Jewish people but the majority were Arab – people who speak Arabic. From 1922…
