18 May 1991 The first Briton is launched into space On 18 May 1991, 27-year-old Helen Sharman from Sheffield, England, became the first British person to travel into space. The former chemist replied to a radio advert that said, “Astronaut wanted, no experience necessary.” Sharman spent 18 months training before launching into space aboard the Soyuz TM-12 space capsule. She spent eight days in space, mostly on Russia’s Mir Space Station, doing science experiments and taking photos of the UK.…
