Gardeners are being encouraged to stop mowing their lawns this month in order to help wildlife. “No Mow May”, a campaign organised by the conservation charity Plantlife, asks people to give their lawnmowers a rest to support wild flowers and insects.
Lawns are common in gardens, parks and other open spaces. They look nice and neat but experts say that areas with nothing but frequently mown grass reduce the variety of plant and animal life that an area can support.
Plantlife says that not mowing lawns can help to tackle some big environmental problems, such as the falling number of bees. A study by the charity showed that 100 square metres of unmowed lawn can produce enough nectar to feed six bumblebees every day, and even leaving small patches or…
