Dartford warblers make a comeback
After nearly going extinct 50 years ago, the Dartford warbler’s population is on the rise in the UK. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has reported the highest ever number of the birds at its nature reserves across the country – a total of 183 pairs. Dartford warblers are small red and grey birds with long tails; the adults weigh just nine to 12 grams. They usually like to sit on top of gorse (a spiky bush with bright yellow flowers) in the spring, when they sing to attract a mate. Gorse is also perfect for them to nest in and to hunt for spiders and caterpillars to eat. The UK population of the warblers has been at risk for 60 years. This was partly caused by…
