Amelia Boynton Robinson A victim of violence on 7 March 1965, Boynton Robinson recovered in time to be on the platform when King delivered his speech in Montgomery on 25 March. She worked to secure rights for poor black people in Alabama and promoted human rights throughout her life. John Lewis Lewis led the first march from Selma on 7 March 1965. In 1986, he was elected to the US House of Representatives (a part of the US government that decides laws). He entered the House in January 1987 and continued to serve as a politician until he died in 2020.
