Should peaceful protesters go to jail?

Some people say that everyone has a right to protest peacefully.

In 2022, the environmental activist group Just Stop Oil (JSO) held a protest on the M25, the busiest motorway in the UK. Activists climbed onto gantries (structures that hold overhead road signs) along the M25. Police had to close parts of the road for safety and the protest lasted for four days. Last year, five of the activists who took part were sentenced to prison for between four and five years. On 7 March, the activists had their punishment slightly reduced after lawyers argued that it was too harsh for what they had done. Other JSO protesters have gone to prison for throwing soup at famous paintings. JSO wants the Government to stop approving fossil fuel projects, which are a cause of climate change.
