The charity saving lives at sea

The RNLI celebrates 200 years of keeping people safe in water.

The RNLI, which stands for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, was founded in 1824 and has saved more than 144,000 lives in its history. The charity provides lifeboats, lifeguards, carries out research and offers educational programmes as part of its work to keep people safe in the sea. How did it begin? The charity was set up by Sir William Hillary on 4 March 1824. At the time, there were nearly 2,000 shipwrecks in the seas around the UK every year. Hillary saw lots of shipwrecks where he lived on the Isle of Man, which lies in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, and he was inspired to do something to help.
