On 8 March, people around the world marked International Women’s Day, an annual event that celebrates the achievements of women and promotes their rights. Throughout history, women and girls have not always been treated fairly compared with men. The first International Women’s Day took place in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The day was partly inspired by the work of the suffragists and suffragettes in the UK, groups that campaigned for women to have the right to vote in elections. The United Nations (UN), an organisation made up of most of the world’s countries, began marking the event in 1975. In some countries, International Women’s Day is an official holiday. In many European cities, people attended marches to campaign for the fair treatment of women. There were celebrations…
