Man’s bloods saves millions of lives
An Australian man who made more than 1,100 blood donations during his lifetime, has died. James Harrison, aged 88, was known as the “man with the golden arm” because of the amount of blood he donated to help save other people’s lives. Harrison’s blood contained a rare antibody. Antibodies are chemicals that protect the body from infections. As a result, Harrison’s blood was used to make 2.4 million doses of a life-saving medication called anti-D injections. These are given to pregnant women who have a blood type that can make their unborn babies unwell. Tracey Mellowship, Harrison’s daughter, said that her father had been “very proud to have saved so many lives, without any cost or pain”.
