How does fog form?
Fog appears when water vapour (lots of tiny particles that float in the air) condenses. Condensation is a process where the water particles combine to form larger water droplets. The two main types of fog in the Atacama Desert, where Alto Hospicio is, are “advection” and “orographic”. Advection fog happens when moist, warm air passes over a colder surface and cools down, which condenses it. Orographic fog forms when wind blows air up a slope. As the air rises, it cools down and condenses. In Chile, which has a long coastline, advection fog forms over the ocean and is blown over the land.…
