Given that you can’t even grab hold of it, the idea of harvesting fog might seem far-fetched. However, it’s already happening in parts of the world, and researchers have now suggested that harvesting fog on a larger scale could be an effective way of supplying water to places that really need it. Fog, which is just a cloud that has formed close to the Earth’s surface, is made up of tiny water droplets (see panel). It is harvested by hanging wire mesh (netting) between poles. When the fog passes through the mesh, droplets form. The water trickles down to a collection pipe and into storage tanks.
