An astronaut in training

Dr Rosemary Coogan, Northern Ireland’s first astronaut, is going through a six-month training programme at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in the US. She completed her European Space Agency (ESA) basic training last year and this is the next level of training to be an astronaut. One skill she has been practising is a spacewalk, which is when an astronaut leaves their spacecraft and goes out into space. The training involves wearing a spacesuit underwater in a giant pool. She told the BBC that it’s “physically hard work”. During training, she’s also tried space food, which is designed to last for a long time in space without going off.
