The people in Parliament

MPs All 650 MPs are elected (voted for by the public) and most represent a political party. MPs each represent an area of the UK, called a constituency. An MP’s main job is to represent the opinions of people in their constituency in Parliament. Peers There are around 800 members of the House of Lords. These are called peers. None are elected but many are chosen by the Government or the monarch (the King) because they are experts in subjects like science or education. Most peers are given the position for the rest of their lives. Speaker The Speaker is an MP who doesn’t side with any political party.
