France votes in first round of election

In the first round of the French election on 30 June, the National Rally party won 33% of the vote. The party is led by Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella and is considered to be French president Emmanuel Macron’s biggest rival. They were followed by the New Popular Front alliance with 28% of the vote. Macron’s Together group of parties only got 21%. At the start of June, Macron had called a “snap” (unexpected) election after his party lost a lot of support in the European elections. These are elections that take place across the EU (European Union) for representatives in the European Parliament (MEPs).
