It’s exciting to read this week about the introduction of animals into areas where they had gone extinct because of humans. Beavers released into the wild in parts of the UK seem to be settling in or even spreading (p11), although a law to protect them that is in place in Scotland has yet to be agreed in England. On the same page, we have a report of bison coming to live in Kent. Both beavers and bison are “keystone” species – in other words, the way they live and behave supports lots of other animals and plants. The bison will help a forest recover and take on a wilder character, giving space for all sorts of animals, birds, insects and young trees to thrive. On p3 we report on…
