Tiger count shows big jump

Hopes of saving tigers from extinction have been given a boost after the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced an update to its Red List of endangered species. Although tigers are still on the list, there are many more of them than previously thought. However, there was bad news for monarch butterflies, which were added to the Red List for the first time. The IUCN says there are now between 3,726 and 5,578 tigers in the wild, an increase of around 40% since the last assessment in 2015. That doesn’t mean the number of tigers has actually jumped by 40% – it’s possible that conservationists have also got better at counting them.
